Juno And The Paycock / Friday 3 October at 10am / £6
In what is regarded as his finest work, O'Casey lays out the terrible truth of his native country - that lethal combination of religion and rebellion, poverty and drink, bravery and bravado that lead to civil war and beyond. Full of O'Casey's unique humour, the play tells the story of the Boyle family who live in a cramped two roomed flat in a Dublin tenement in 1922.
Jack Boyle works hard to avoid work, Jack's wife Juno is the breadwinner and moral powerhouse, their son Johnny is a moral weakling always waiting in fear of a knock on the door, while their daughter Mary has delusions of grandeur and a belief that she is destined for a better life. Their prayers seem to be answered, when a solicitor arrives to tell the family that they have been left an inheritance. However, all is not as it seems.
